Rockland County, New York, in the 1790s

The most comprehensive account to date of the creation of Rockland County
in 1798. Based on primary sources, particularly U.S. census records
and the diaries of David Pye and Tunis Smith, and enlivened with stories
of the people (white, black, and Native American) who lived in this agricultural
region two hundred years ago. Funded in part by a grant from
Furthermore, the publication program of the J. M. Kaplan Fund, and
published in commemoration of the two-hundredth anniversary of the
erection of Rockland County in 1998.

The Historical Society of Rockland County is a nonprofit educational institution and principal repository for original documents and artifacts relating to Rockland County. Its headquarters are a four-acre site featuring a history museum and the 1832 Jacob Blauvelt House in New City, New York.
