LINCOLN AND NEW YORK, a panel exhibition from the New-York Historical Society, probes the myths and controversies surrounding Abraham Lincoln. 

Starting with the iconic Mathew Brady image of Lincoln without his beard, the panels follow Lincoln's earliest efforts to gain the blessing of the political and journalistic leaders of New York for a presidential run. Original research explores New York’s influence on the Civil War, the impact of emancipation, and the promotion of Lincoln’s persona as he evolved from an obscure Illinois politician to a national martyr. 

Visitors who think they know everything about Lincoln will be startled to see so much that is new! 

The panels are complemented by items from the HSRC’s permanent collection, together with artifacts on loan from other local history organizations. These rarely seen objects will highlight Rockland County’s connection to Lincoln and illustrate Rockland’s contribution to the Civil War. 

LINCOLN AND NEW YORK was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. 

The following special programs were held in conjunction with the exhibition: 


  • Sunday, April 13, 2 pm: Family Program: The Songs of the Civil War with Linda Russell (made possible by a grant from the NY State Council on Humanities)
  • Saturday and Sunday, April 26–27, 12-4 pm: Civil War Encampment with the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry, Company B
  • Thursday, May 1, 7:15 pm: Lecture by Sheriff James Kralik (Ret.) (includes film and discussion)
  • Thursday, May 15, 7:15 pm: Lecture by Barnet Schecter on the Draft Riots (location: Valley Cottage Library; 110 Route 303, Valley Cottage)
  • Sunday, June 8, 2 pm: Living History Family Program: "The Price of Freedom: Through the Eyes of Nyack's Daniel Ullman," by Doug Carey
  • Thursday, June 12, 7:15 pm: Lecture: "Civil War, Politics, and Peace: Disputes on Rockland's Homefront," by Brian Jennings


All programs take place at the HSRC, unless noted otherwise. Dates and times are are subject to change. All programs except the encampment require reservations.
